The Formosan Association for Public Affairs (FAPA), the most important advocate of Taiwan in the US, recently had an ad on the referendum and UN entry in the Washington Post. In something totally awful and completely unrelated, I’d like to take a moment to extend my heartfelt sympathies to the people of Korea. Apparently some nutcase burnt down the Sungnyemun Gate in Seoul, perhaps that nation’s most important and beloved historical monument. Built in the 1390s, it had been the subject of innumerable photos and essays on the contrast between the ornate, ancient gate and the skyscrapers that had sprung up about it.
