A farmhouse outside of Taichung where several related families live. Other Work Opportunities

There are dozens of jobs available for expats who drift into Taipei. There is serious work, in marketing, management at foreign companies, etc, though firms mostly rely on locals for this. Many people who stay for a while move into these jobs after they tire of the draining work of teaching.  Outside of Taipei there are fewer opportunities for this kind of work, unless you have
well-developed connections.

An altar in a family home.  However, you can expand into acting, modeling, editing, writing, translating (if you learn Chinese very well), recording and taping, entertaining and so forth. The sky's the limit. Most of these jobs pay much better than English teaching and don't advertise in the paper. That's why it is so important to NETWORK, NETWORK, NETWORK with everyone you meet, foreign or local, whether you like them or not. Always network with the parents of the kids you teach. If you are good, many parents will want you to teach their kids privately. This can be a solid if unreliable secondary source of income.

IMPORTANT: get some business cards made right away at a cheap local printers! Taiwanese love to collect business cards and someday a stray business card may "hit" on a wonderful job.
